For our project, we were inspired by public art installations in Harlem because of their ability to build community and spark conversation. We wanted to convey a message about sustainability by using materials we collected from the college community. Our peers came to us with notes, handouts, and thousands of pages of readings which we crafted into a multilayered paper "cave." We put up our project outside a popular campus eatery (The Diana Cafe) and observed the community reaction. The form of our installation lends itself to interpretation, but judging from surveys and conversations with our classmates, our project has had a net positive impact on the site in terms of beautifying the formerly unused area and successfully ignited discussions about the environmental impacts of being a student.
